Strong decisive action is needed to prevent the uptake of e-cigarettes based on the growing body of evidence of its use by children and adolescents and health harms. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. This report makes recommendations for the improvement of this research and highlights gaps that are a priority for future research. Vape explosions have been linked to faulty batteries in vaping devices.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Lung Association are glad to have the rules. But, Sward adds, "We certainly thought [the FDA] should have gone farther -- ending the sale of flavored products." Some come in candy and fruity flavors that appeal to kids and teens. Sward points out that according to the FDA, there's no evidence any e-cigarette is safe and effective at helping smokers quit. She suggests talking to your doctor about medications and other strategies that are proven stop-smoking tools. There is an urgent, overdue need for standardized processes for the disposal of e-cigarette devices, refills and e-liquids. Waste management and hazardous waste disposal plants are not currently equipped to handle e-cigarette waste and federal regulations still have not caught up to the need for guidance on disposal of these types of small electronics containing toxic waste.
But they may also contain other compounds including artificial flavors, nicotine, THC, and cannabinoid (CBD) oil. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including e-cigs, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), alternative nicotine delivery systems (ANDS), e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vaporizers, vapes, and tank systems. We know nicotine and other ingredients in e-liquids can hurt your body and we still don’t know what long-term health problems vaping could cause. There are online resources, texting and phone services and apps that connect you with real people to help you on your journey to kick the habit. E-cigarettes, aka JUULs and vape pens, use a battery to heat up a special liquid into an aerosol that users inhale.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products.
Recent guidance from the Center for Tobacco Products indicates the importance of switching completely away from combustible cigarettes for those who are also using e-cigarettes," she added. The investigators revealed that daily vs nondaily use of e-cigarettes was linked to higher overall rates of quitting combustible cigarettes (12.8% vs 6.1%). The adults who used e-cigarettes in 2019 were more likely to stop smoking traditional cigarettes compared with those who used the e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 (12.0% vs 5.3%). There was limited evidence that flavor or device type impacted cigarette cessation. The findings suggest that daily e-cigarette use may help some patients to quit smoking combustible cigarettes.
There are also reports of lung illnesses and deaths related to inhalation of certain vaping oils into the lungs, which have no way to filter out toxic ingredients. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
Electronic nicotine and vapor delivery systems, which include e-cigarettes, vaping pens, e-hookah and similar devices, typically contain nicotine. Some ingredients found in e-cigarettes are considered toxic and there is no regulation of what chemicals e-cigarettes contain or how much nicotine the user is inhaling. These factors could lead to long-term adverse health effects for e-cigarette users and bystanders. This new law will reduce exposure to the potentially dangerous chemicals for e-cigarette users and those around them. Prior to electronic cigarettes being added to the Clean Indoor Air Act, only the smoking of substances containing tobacco, including cigars, cigarettes or pipes, were restricted in public places. While many counties have already banned the use of e-cigarettes in public places, including restaurants, bars and other work places, this bill makes the law consistent across New York State.
In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. Heating the liquid (e-juices) causes formation of an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. These electronic smoking devices come in different shapes and sizes and can look like regular cigarettes, pens, and even flash drives (similar to the popular brand "JUUL"). E-cigarettes go by many names including vapes, e-cigs, e-pens, e-hookahs and mods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extended its regulatory authority over tobacco products to include e-cigarettes in May 2016.
They are not recommended for non-smokers and cannot be sold to people under 18 years old. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become a very popular stop smoking aid in the UK. Passengers are required to take effective measures for preventing accidental activation of the heating element of the device when transporting the devices. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
Carbonyls in cigarette smoke are formed mainly by pyrolysis of tobacco sugars83, whereas those in e-cigarettes are formed mainly by thermal degradation of PG and/or VG83,84,85. Flavourings may also contribute to the formation of carbonyls, as well as the characteristics of the e-cigarette devices, especially the applied voltage, coil resistance and wicking material47,48,49,86,87. Poor wicking efficiency may lead to a dry wick and overheated e-liquid (dry puff), which promotes the formation of carbonyls and other toxic compounds2,10,13,15. Coil location, orientation, resistance and wick material, as well as power output, have been shown to affect carbonyl generation significantly13,15,86.
The vape juice in this device is tightly sealed inside its own compartment, with heat-resistant food-grade fibers to wick it up to the heating coil. This reduces the chances of liquid sloshing around inside and causing issues with the battery. There's also a smart chip designed to prevent overheating, making it much less likely that you'll burn yourself or start a fire. I can be conscious not to blow my vapor in your direction, if you will be conscious not to send your judgment and complaints in mine. Dr Sonu Goel, a distinguished public health expert and chairperson of the Tobacco Control Section explained that e-cigarettes, also known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), vaporise a nicotine solution instead of burning tobacco leaves.
The 2019 outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth. The amount, quantity and toxicity of substances that e-cigarettes release depend on several factors, such as the type of device, how the device operates and is used, and the e-liquid used. Drop the Vape also directs users to the New York State Quitline for free and confidential quit-coaching via telephone, internet, and text, and free starter kits of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for eligible New Yorkers. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.
Although PG and glycerol are the major components of e-liquids other components have been detected. Of note, the analysis identified formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein [4], 3 carbonyl compounds with known high toxicity [63,64,65,66,67]. While no information was given regarding formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations, the authors calculated that one puff could result in an acrolein exposure of 0.003–0.015 μg/mL [4]. However, given that e-cigarette units of vaping are not well established, users may puff intermittently throughout the whole day. Thus, assuming 400 to 500 puffs per cartridge, users could be exposed to up to 300 μg of acrolein.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
Once discarded into the environment, the filters create a large waste problem. Synthetic particulate filters may remove some of the tar before it reaches the smoker. The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to the privacy of individuals that participated in the study.
A 2018 report from the National Academies Press (NAP) found significant evidence that taking a puff from a nicotine e-cigarette triggers an increase in heart rate. In summary, it seems that either smoking or nicotine vaping may adversely impact on COVID-19 outcome. However, additional follow up studies are required in COVID-19 pandemic to clarify the effect of e-cigarette use on lung and cardiovascular complications derived from SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is also noteworthy that among the 3 most cytotoxic vapours for HUVEC evaluated in the Putzhammer et al. study, 2 were nicotine-free, which suggests that nicotine is not the only hazardous component in e-cigarettes [24]. However, while vape products can reduce the amount of tar and other chemicals a person inhales, they can increase a person’s nicotine dependency. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states that around half of all smokers try to quit every year, while only 6% manage to do so.
Besides nicotine, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor typically contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin. These are substances used to produce stage or theatrical fog which have been found to increase lung and airway irritation after concentrated exposure. FDA’s award-winning public education campaign, "The Real Cost," continues to prevent youth from tobacco initiation and use.
Vaping can cause lung injury and may affect lung health in other ways. Since COVID-19 can also affect your lungs, vaping may put your lungs at increased risk. Other andreja pejić electronic cigarette vapor products that use e-liquids include e-cigars, e-pipes, and hookah pens (e-hookah).
Research has also shown flavor chemicals to be toxic in both e-liquid and aerosol form. While many flavor chemicals used in vaping products have been approved for ingestion, they have not yet been tested for safety when aerosolized. Flavor chemicals are typically not listed on e-cigarette packaging, and most e-liquids contain more than one flavor chemical. Benzaldehyde (used in cherry-flavored products) and 2, 5-dimethyprazine (used in chocolate-flavored products), specifically, may harm human health.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved any e-cigarette products as a medicine to help people quit smoking. Most modern cigarettes are filtered, although this does not make the smoke inhaled from them contain fewer carcinogens and harmful chemicals. Nicotine, the psychoactive drug in tobacco, makes cigarettes highly addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and lose on average 14 years of life.
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. The rapidly rising rates of use in young people and the high rates of daily use strongly suggest that many are addicted to nicotine and will have difficulty in stopping use of all tobacco products. One study found that people who use only e-cigarettes increase their risk of developing lung disease by about 30% compared with nonusers. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are devices used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
Any smoking is harmful and you will only get the full benefits of vaping if you stop smoking completely. This is in contrast to passive smoking (secondhand smoke), which is known to be very harmful to health.
The cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory effects of different e-cigarette flavouring chemicals were also tested on two human monocytic cell lines—mono mac 6 (MM6) and U937 [86]. Also, all the tested flavours produced significant levels of ROS in a cell-free ROS production assay. Finally, diacetyl, pentanedione, O-vanillin, maltol, coumarin, and CAD induced significant IL-8 secretion from MM6 and U937 monocytes [86]. It should be borne in mind, however, that the concentrations assayed were in the supra-physiological range and it is likely that, once inhaled, these concentrations are not reached in the airway space.
Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.
The researchers said that the findings suggest that if tobacco cigarette smokers who use e-cigarettes for a healthier alternative to tobacco won’t benefit by the switch. Cannabis and CBD e-liquids usually contain other chemicals, such as base liquids or flavoring agents. They may cause side effects similar to those of nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Young people who vape nicotine are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. The 2018 NAP report concluded there’s some evidence that nicotine and nicotine-free e-cigarettes can damage oral cells and tissues in people who don’t smoke cigarettes.

Since they were first introduced in the U.S. in the late 2000s, electronic nicotine products have often been portrayed as a safer alternative to smoking, but a growing body of research has led to increased concern about potential negative health effects. Some individuals who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. Since smoking kills fully half of all long-time users, successfully stopping smoking leads to well-documented health benefits.
E-liquid physical properties are also important in carbonyl formation15,47,84,86. The viscosity and density of the e-liquid determine its mobility, capillary action, and delivery to the wick and coil, influencing the likelihood of a dry puff15. Sub-ohm vapes (sometimes called cloud kits) are more advanced vaping devices that are capable of outputting huge amounts of power; if you’ve ever noticed someone exhaling gigantic clouds from their kit, they were probably using one of these! Using a sub-ohm device requires a working knowledge of battery safety and Ohm’s Law, so it’s best to do some reading before investing in one. "India should be taking lessons from the West where vaping has become an epidemic. Claims that e-cigarettes aid cessation is a big lie, rather they are gateway devices.

E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.

Susceptibility to smoking or non-combustible nicotine use is also influenced by national tobacco control policies. In Europe, Finland has been among the countries with most advanced tobacco control regulations [31]. Still, there is a large difference in smoking and snus use between students in academically and non-academically oriented education [7]. For snus, Finland follows the EU-wide sales ban but cross-border traveller imports from Sweden are permitted and an illicit market exists [32]. For e-cigarettes, comprehensive regulations were introduced in 2016 including retail sale licensing and ban for distance sales, display and advertising at point-of-sale, other flavours than tobacco and use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free places [33].
Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction. However, there is no requirement that the Electronic Cigarette tax needs to be broken out separately from the sales tax on an invoice or receipt, but both taxes must be collected on the transaction for products subject to the tax. Most have a battery, heating element, and place to hold a liquid, usually containing highly addictive nicotine, that is added or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other substance. E-cigarettes are called many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "vapor products," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." The chemicals in electronic cigarettes, commonly called vapes, can severely damage the lungs, according to studies reviewed by the American Lung Association. The nicotine in them, which can be in higher quantities than traditional cigarettes, can also impact a child’s brain development. Several peer-reviewed studies found that nicotine negatively affects teens’ memory and attention and can increase their risk of developing other mental and behavioral problems later in life.
In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a "tumour enhancer". In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50]. Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker.
The flavored vape juice inside contains only vegetable glycerine and organic fruit extracts. That means it's free from all the harmful chemicals we mentioned above. It's a stripped-down, vegan-friendly, nicotine-free vaping experience. When I smoked cigarettes, I dealt with inconveniences due to my addiction. I would be forced to leave the company of my friends and family to go stand outdoors, like an outcast or lesser human, so that I could prevent myself from having a withdrawal meltdown.
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. It might be a while before we have a clear picture of how secondhand vaping can impact a person’s long-term health, especially for young children.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. Previous studies of such policies have mostly examined local or temporary post-2019 state policies. The Yale study was the first to assess how flavor restrictions across most of the United States influence sales of both vapes and cigarettes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "The Real Cost" campaign seeks to prevent susceptible youth from trying tobacco or becoming regular users.
However, the FDA then paused its decision in July while it carries out an additional review on the company's products. Many physical retail locations neglect to check identification for customers, allowing children to access the devices. Like cigarettes, an American must be at least 21 years old to purchase a vape.
