In smoking and school disengagement (e.g. truancy), students often choose to affiliate with similar peers [28, 29]. Smoking prevalence has been lower in schools where educational attainment and attendance are better than predicted based on student socio-demographic factors, indicating the importance of positive school ethos [30]. Yet, other school-level factors than school connectedness [22] have rarely been studied in connection with susceptibility. Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes.
Since This is Quitting launched as a text message program in 2019, more than 750,000 young people have enrolled from across the U.S. Grounded in clinical guidelines for treating tobacco dependence, This is Quitting incorporates powerful messages from other young e-cigarette users who have offered their advice about how to quit. Teens and young adults can text DITCHVAPE to to receive free quit vaping support from the program. This study is the first published randomized clinical trial of a quit vaping program among teens, filling an important gap in the scientific literature and providing much needed evidence for pediatricians, school administrators, and public health agencies. Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. Further, educational aspirations and school engagement are tied to student composition and school-based networks and norms, which have had different associations with smoking between schools [28].
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. Minnesota teens are using e-cigarettes and vapes at alarming rates, exposing themselves to the harms of nicotine and risking addiction.
Experts have long suspected it, but a new study confirms that folks who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they'd done either alone. Propylene glycol, for example, is usually eaten (in cupcakes, soft drinks and salad dressings) or slathered onto the body (in soaps, shampoos and antiperspirants)—not breathed into the lungs. Many things that can be safely eaten—such as flour—can damage the lungs when inhaled. "We have little information about what happens to propylene glycol in the air," the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says on its Web site.
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
I want to carry the stink and taste that won’t let me forget I’m damaging myself when I’m smoking. The way to quit isn’t through a device that made a nicotine hit easier, or fun. In other words, just because something is safe to eat doesn’t mean it’s safe to be inhaled. (Duh.) Vaping also seems to trigger potentially harmful immune responses in the lungs.
Heating the liquid (e-juices) causes formation of an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. These electronic smoking devices come in different shapes and sizes and can look like regular cigarettes, pens, and even flash drives (similar to the popular brand "JUUL"). This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing a combustible material, typically tobacco, that is rolled into thin paper for smoking. The cigarette is ignited at one end, causing it to smolder; the resulting smoke is orally inhaled via the opposite end. The term cigarette, as commonly used, refers to a tobacco cigarette, but the word is sometimes used to refer to other substances, such as a cannabis cigarette or a herbal cigarette. A cigarette is distinguished from a cigar by its usually smaller size, use of processed leaf, different smoking method, and paper wrapping, which is typically white. In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. Some products claiming to be nicotine-free (ENNDS) have been found to contain nicotine. Your doctor will begin his or her diagnosis by asking you about your use of e-cigarettes within the past three months and whether you vaped a product containing nicotine, THC, or both. During the physical exam, your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your lungs, check your heartrate, and measure your blood oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. A chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan is usually necessary for diagnosis and will show hazy looking spots (called opacities) in the lungs. Your doctor may also order bloodwork to rule out other possible causes of your illness.
In addition to these laws, e-cigarettes are prohibited from being used in child care facilities, and people purchasing tobacco products have to pay a 15 percent tax. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
This was especially the case for people aged 14 to 17 (74%) and 18 to 24 (68%). The 2022–2023 NDSHS was conducted before these restrictions were put into place. At the time, in most jurisdictions, it was legal for adults to purchase e‑cigarettes that did not contain nicotine from a broad range of retail settings, including those used to purchase tobacco products. Researchers have linked vitamin E acetate, a synthetic form of vitamin E found in some THC-containing vaping products, to EVALI.
When studying tobacco cigarettes, researchers rely on smoking machines that simulate how frequently a typical smoker takes a puff and how much smoke is inhaled with each breath. No one has yet determined how much e-cig vapor the typical user breathes in, so different studies assume different amounts of vapor as their standard, making it difficult to compare their results. Tracing what happens to that vapor once it is inhaled is equally problematic.
Vapes are often viewed and marketed as a safe alternative to smoking. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in people who don’t smoke. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is highly addictive. While these devices may help some people quit smoking, there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can pose serious health risks, especially to people who do not smoke traditional cigarettes.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Increased mucus production right after quitting smoking may be a positive sign that your respiratory system is recovering. What might be considered safe for the average workplace employee could still pose serious health risks for more medically vulnerable populations.
In some instances, because of its appearance and the vapours it emits, an e-cigarette may be confused with a regular cigarette. Other types of e-cigarettes, however, are similar to a cigar, a smoking pipe, or a ballpoint pen in appearance. This story has been updated to correct that two of the four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy are disposable products.

One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Minnesota youth who have asthma are more likely than their peers to smoke or vape, and people who have asthma who smoke or vape are likely to experience worsening symptoms and require medical treatment. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
To be clear, I never even used to smoke during the day when I was using cigarettes. But if a project is particularly stressful (or just slightly vexatious, any excuse will do), my sleek little e-cig is just sitting in my bag at my feet. Like a never-ending pipe, you don’t know when you’ve had enough, when you’ve had a cigarette’s worth of nicotine. One quick puff to slay your stress can turn into one puff every few minutes, then whenever I get the slightest urge.
This includes banning the sale of all non-prescription e-cigarettes and prohibiting the sale of any disposable or single-use e-cigarettes. In 2022–2023, 2.3% of people in Australia both smoked regular cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes, an increase from 0.7% in 2016. In the second study, researchers analyzed heart blood flow, a measure of coronary vascular function, of 19 young adult smokers immediately before and after smoking either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. They examined coronary vascular function by a myocardial contrast echocardiography while participants were at rest and after performing a handgrip exercise to simulate physiologic stress. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
The FDA does not currently require testing of all the substances in e-cigarettes to ensure they are safe. It's also hard to know exactly what chemicals are in an e-cigarette because most products do not list all of the harmful or potentially harmful substances contained in them. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, but many of them contain nicotine, which comes from tobacco. Because of this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies them as "tobacco products." For adults who smoke, switching completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes may reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals present in cigarettes. However, it is important that they switch completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes to get the full health benefit.
In addition to nicotine, e-cigarettes can also be used to inhale other drugs, such as cannabis. Retailers are not permitted to sell e-cigarettes in retail outlets to anyone. Instances of non-compliance should be reported to the local council where the premises is located. More than 5 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes, according to the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Study (NYTS), up from more than 3.6 million the previous year. Surgeon General’s office began the work of awareness when the nation’s doctor, Jerome Adams, MD, issued a warning that vaping among youth has reached epidemic levels. This module provides an understanding of the inner workings of e-cigarettes, the content of the aerosols they produce, and thirdhand smoke.
They also contain toxins that can damage your lungs and overall health. One of the reasons why the e-cigarette epidemic among young people is so troubling is that e-cigarette use seems to lead to the use of traditional cigarettes. This makes them a better choice for people who already smoke or use other tobacco products. Vaping may have some benefits for smokers who switch to it as a complete substitute for using other tobacco products. E-cigarette manufacturers are using marketing tactics used by the tobacco industry to lure kids to conventional cigarettes.
Nearly five times as many high school students use e-cigarettes than smoke cigarettes. The particle matter (PM) that is emitted by e-cigarettes is also potentially dangerous to those who inhale it, just as passive smoking is harmful to those who share a contained space with regular smokers. Nicotine is a poison which is particularly dangerous if ingested (swallowed or inhaled) by young children which has led to poisoning and even death when swallowed by infants. It is also highly addictive and use by teenagers can have a long-term effect on the development of the brain, which continues until the age of 25 years.
Among people who were currently using e‑cigarettes, the proportion of people who used them daily remained stable from 2016 (42%) to 2019 (42%), then increased in 2022–2023 (49%). While more males than females used e‑cigarettes daily, the change among females was much greater than among males, rising from 36% in 2019 to 51% in 2022–2023. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in the number of females using e‑cigarettes daily, from approximately 70,000 to 300,000 (Figure 2).
There are also reports of lung illnesses and deaths related to inhalation of certain vaping oils into the lungs, which have no way to filter out toxic ingredients. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
FDA published a rule clarifying when products made or derived from tobacco are regulated as tobacco products, drugs, and/ or devices. Vaping is when you use a handheld electronic device to breathe a mist ("vapor") into your lungs. An e-cigarette, vape pen or other electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) heats a liquid of nicotine, flavoring, propylene glycol and other additives into an aerosol that you inhale through a mouthpiece.

Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. E-cigarette use can also result in serious injury due to defective batteries that have caused fires and explosions. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into the lungs. While cigarettes burn tobacco that produces smoke, e-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol that often contains nicotine, various chemicals, heavy metals (nickel, tin, and lead) and small particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.
This data brief demonstrates that teens whose environments put them at risk for use of e-cigarettes are more likely to try them. The study, published on May 23, 2022, in Tobacco Control, is the first to look at the health care costs of e-cigarette use among adults 18 and older. The second most supported measure, strengthening restrictions on the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes, was supported by 82% of people. In 2019, only 67% of people in Australia supported strengthening these restrictions. The proportion of people neither smoking regular cigarettes nor using e‑cigarettes has remained stable (Figure 3).

This includes data on youth use of these products, which has led to development of several educational programs designed to prevent adolescents and teens from using these products. Through tobacco product problem reports and tobacco product violation reports, the FDA also knows much more about many safety and health hazards they may pose. The Surgeon General reports e-cigarette use among youth is a significant public health concern and steps must be taken by parents, educators and especially policymakers to discourage use of e-cigarettes.

I don’t sit around inhaling lungful after lungful of vape for seven minutes at a time, like I would a real cigarette, so the lingering aura from my habit certainly isn’t hovering for extended periods of time.
Moreover, we just don’t know the long-term effects of vaping," said Dr. Bhavna Barmi, a senior clinical psychologist. Vaping, still at epidemic levels among youth with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020, generates a significant amount of toxic and plastic waste. Many popular e-cigarettes, like JUUL, are pod-based with single-use plastic cartridges containing nicotine. Generating even more waste are disposable e-cigarettes like Puff Bar, which are designed entirely for one-time use and have skyrocketed in popularity with a 1,000% increase in use among high school students between 2019 and 2020. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase risk for future addiction to nicotine and other drugs.
Median odds ratio (MOR), which shows the difference between two respondents with identical student-level characteristics from two randomly chosen different schools, was calculated to express between-school variance on the odds ratio scale [36]. The analysis was not pre-registered, and the results should be considered exploratory. Scholastic Real Cost of VapingThe FDA collaborated with the Scholastic Corporation to develop lessons, activities and resources for teachers to increase awareness about the health consequences of youth e-cigarette use. Stanford Medicine is an integrated academic health system comprising the Stanford School of Medicine and adult and pediatric health care delivery systems.
