Our information relates to legal e-cigarettes – ones that are registered with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).
This includes the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, which tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and interventions to combat it and other relevant resources. Because of the lack of long-term data and the fact that patients have died from EVALI, the prognosis for those affected remains uncertain. Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
Steer clear of unregulated mods unless you have lots of experience vaping and a decent knowledge of electronics. Like disposable vapes, these devices don't allow modification to the battery and heating element. The difference is that they're rechargeable and refillable, letting you swap in a fresh pod or cartridge of vape juice when the old one runs out.
Kasza's group also pointed to dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes, which has increased over time and usually involves smoking cigarettes more frequently than using e-cigarettes. "Individuals who dual use remain exposed to cigarette smoking toxicants, making complete rather than partial substitution of cigarettes with e-cigarettes important for risk reduction," they wrote. "Indeed, healthcare clinicians are now encouraged to discuss e-cigarettes as a cessation tool with patients who smoke cigarettes and have already tried FDA-approved cessation medications." A comparison of the serum levels of nicotine from e-cigarette or conventional cigarette consumption has been recently reported [39].
Not only is there evidence of mislabelling of nicotine content among refills labelled as nicotine-free, but there also seems to be a history of poor labelling accuracy in nicotine-containing e-liquids [37, 38]. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," concluded senior study author Andrew Hyland, PhD, Chair of Health Behavior at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Meanwhile, people who were smoking e-cigarettes non-daily had a 3.1% rate of quitting smoking and a 10.2% rate of cutting down to non-daily tobacco smoking. However, the CDC states that there is insufficient evidence to suggest vaping can help people quit smoking. A second brand of e-cigarettes -- marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe – contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine. The nicotine analogs were included in flavored e-cigarettes, which prior research has indicated are preferred by youths and those who vape for the first time.
Since This is Quitting launched as a text message program in 2019, more than 750,000 young people have enrolled from across the U.S. Grounded in clinical guidelines for treating tobacco dependence, This is Quitting incorporates powerful messages from other young e-cigarette users who have offered their advice about how to quit. Teens and young adults can text DITCHVAPE to to receive free quit vaping support from the program. This study is the first published randomized clinical trial of a quit vaping program among teens, filling an important gap in the scientific literature and providing much needed evidence for pediatricians, school administrators, and public health agencies. Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. Further, educational aspirations and school engagement are tied to student composition and school-based networks and norms, which have had different associations with smoking between schools [28].
That legal decision allowed sales of e-cigarettes to proceed but left many questions about their safety unaddressed. To lower the potential risks posed by secondhand aerosol exposure from vaping, some U.S. states, territories, and cities have started restricting where people can vape. There are currently more than 7,000 varieties of flavored e-cigarettes and e-juice (liquid containing nicotine that is used in refillable devices) on the market. Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, there is a lack of data on their potential health effects. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under its authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products. Fourth-generation ‘pod’ e-cigarette devices have been driven by technological advances in electronic atomization of the e-liquid.
In the multivariate model (Table 3), results were similar for both girls and boys. S-EC remained higher for those planning for vocational education, and lower with liking school. Further, S-EC was higher with parental smoking, positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and current snus use. Between-school differences were larger for girls (MOR 1.23) than boys (MOR 1.16). Educational aspirations were measured with ‘Where do you primarily want to go to study after comprehensive school?
So I must ask that you not make them about you and respectfully let me and my vape alone. I can be conscious not to blow my vapor in your direction, if you will be conscious not to send your judgment and complaints in mine. Dr Sonu Goel, a distinguished public health expert and chairperson of the Tobacco Control Section explained that e-cigarettes, also known as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), vaporise a nicotine solution instead of burning tobacco leaves.
In 2022–2023, 2.3% of people in Australia both smoked regular cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes, an increase from 0.7% in 2016. In the second study, researchers analyzed heart blood flow, a measure of coronary vascular function, of 19 young adult smokers immediately before and after smoking either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. They examined coronary vascular function by a myocardial contrast echocardiography while participants were at rest and after performing a handgrip exercise to simulate physiologic stress. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
New 'pod-mod' style vape products are similar in shape and size to JUUL® and other vape sticks but are disposable. New York State has enacted strong policies to protect youth from accessing tobacco products and denormalize tobacco and nicotine use to prevent lifelong addiction, illness, and early death. Policies include banning the sale of flavored vapor products, ending price discounts on tobacco and vapor products, and banning the exterior display of tobacco and vapor product ads near schools. E-cigarettes also are controversial because of various regulatory issues. In January 2010, following a lawsuit by an e-cigarette distributor, the U.S.
Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered devices used to vape a flavoured solution containing varying concentrations of nicotine, an addictive chemical found in tobacco products. Some people take up vaping – or inhaling vapor from electronic cigarettes – to avoid the health hazards of smoking cigarettes made with tobacco. But when it comes to your heart health, a pair of recent studies show e-cigarettes are just as dangerous – and possibly are even more dangerous – than traditional cigarettes. The long-term effects of smoking cigarettes are well-documented and include an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and lung cancer.
Strong decisive action is needed to prevent the uptake of e-cigarettes based on the growing body of evidence of its use by children and adolescents and health harms. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. This report makes recommendations for the improvement of this research and highlights gaps that are a priority for future research. Vape explosions have been linked to faulty batteries in vaping devices.

Such policies are critical in the absence of strong federal regulation of e-cigarettes. As of March 31, 2023, seven states and an estimated 388 counties, cities, towns, and tribes have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco products. However, this leaves a large majority of the U.S. population not covered by such restrictions. E-cigarette sales have rapidly escalated in the relatively short history of the products. Overall e-cigarette sales, as well as the total number of e-cigarette brands, increased by more than 46% between January 2020 and December 2022. Disposable e-cigarettes have nearly tripled in nicotine strength, quintupled in e-liquid capacity, and dropped in price by nearly 70% between 2017 and 2022.
There's always a chance that the fail-safe could fail, though, which is why we don't consider these as safe as other vaping devices. The biggest risks in vaping devices come when you get into highly customizable "mods." These devices allow for lots of fine-tuning in terms of the internal electrical setup. But this added flexibility means more possibilities for health hazards. You'll have to be careful not to buy knock-off vape liquids with unhealthy contaminants, for one thing.
The number of unique e-cigarette products more than quadrupled from 453 in June 2021 to 2,023 in June 2022. But it is not responsible for the harmful effects of smoking, and nicotine does not cause cancer. People have safely used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to stop smoking for many years. Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.
According to the American Lung Association, cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. Young people in Michigan who are looking to quit vaping can enroll in This is Quitting by texting SACREDBREATH to 88709.
Nicotine yields for different e-cigarette brands have been reported from 2 to 313 µg puff−1 while for conventional cigarettes smoke the values ranged from 170 to 232 µg puff−16,31,36,48,64. Nicotine poisoning refers to the toxic effects of consuming nicotine, a chemical in all tobacco products. A recent increase in poisonings is due to liquid nicotine, a product in the popular e-cigarette. Symptoms include vomiting, rapid heart rate, unsteadiness and increased salivation. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group).
Each time you resist a tobacco craving, you're one step closer to stopping tobacco use for good. PHE’s remit letter for 2014 to 2015 requested an update of the evidence around e-cigarettes. PHE commissioned Professors Ann McNeill and Peter Hajek to review the available evidence. The review builds on previous evidence summaries published by PHE in 2014. All of our local NHS Stop Smoking Services now proactively welcome anyone who wants to use these devices as part of their quit attempt and increase their chance of success. Cancer Research UK is funding more research to deal with the unanswered questions around these products including the longer-term impact.
We want to make a difference in the lives of our users, and create products that can fit all levels and styles of vapers, to help as many as possible. Stanford Medicine Tobacco Prevention ToolkitTheory-based and evidence-informed resources created by educators, parents, and researchers aimed at preventing middle and high school students' use of tobacco and nicotine. There are several resources available to assist with learning more about e-cigarettes and educating youth about the risks. Resources are available for parents, educators, and health care providers. According to the 2017 Behavior Risk Factor Survey (BRFS) conducted by DHSS, 4.8 percent of Delaware adults currently use e-cigarettes, roughly the same percentage reported in the 2016 survey.
More research needs to be done to understand the long-term health effects of secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor. Secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor is said to be less toxic than secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke. However, secondhand vapor is still a form of air pollution that probably poses health risks. N.L.B. serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies that market or are developing smoking cessation medications, and has provided expert testimony in litigation against tobacco companies. N.A.R. consults with and has received a research grant from Achieve Life Sciences for development of a smoking cessation medication, and receives royalties from UpToDate (an online medical textbook) as author of sections on e-cigarettes.
Vaping works by heating liquid in a small device so you can breathe it into your lungs. The e-cigarette, vape pen or other vaping device heats the liquid in the device to create an aerosol. Mist from e-cigarettes contains particles of nicotine, flavoring and other substances suspended in air. You breathe these particles into your mouth from the mouthpiece, where they go down your throat and into your lungs. But, Blaha says, interpreting the data is tricky, since young people change their preferences often, and, when surveyed, may not consider using disposable products such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says disposable e-cigarette use has increased 1,000% among high school students and 400% among middle school students since 2019.
Perhaps contrary to what many would expect, vaping marijuana may have as many negative health effects as nicotine-based vaping. This may have more to do with how vape liquids are processed than the THC itself. The tobacco industry profits from destroying health and is using these newer products to get a seat at the policy-making table with governments to lobby against health policies. The tobacco industry funds and promotes false evidence to argue that these products reduce harm, while at the same time heavily promoting these products to children and non-smokers and continuing to sell billions of cigarettes.
New York State law restricts the sale of flavored vapor products intended or reasonably expected to be used with or for the consumption of nicotine, regardless of whether the nicotine is derived from tobacco or synthetic. Per the survey, 10.0% of students (2.80 million) reported current use of any tobacco product; 12.6% (1.97 million) high school students and 6.6% (800,000) middle school students reported current use of any tobacco product. Importantly, the researchers found strong evidence of the program's effectiveness among key subgroups defined by race, ethnicity, gender, higher levels of nicotine dependence, smoking and other substance use, mental health challenges, and household dysfunction. "For many years, healthcare providers, teachers, and parents have been asking how to help teens quit vaping," said Dr. Amanda Graham, Chief Health Officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study.
Their tactics include slick magazine ads, sponsorship of concerts and auto races, celebrity endorsements and sweet, colorful flavors.21 In addition, e-cigarettes are often aggressively placed in convenience stores near candy. Flavors, including mint and menthol, are one of the top reasons young people use e-cigarettes. Candy and fruit-flavored e-liquids can make e-cigarettes appealing and seem harmless. It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.
E-cigarettes are devices that allow you to inhale nicotine in a vapor rather than smoke. Vaping is often pushed as a healthier alternative to smoking and used as a tool to get smokers to quit, which could have contributed to the state's high vaping rate. The findings come as damning research mounts on the harms of e-cigarettes, particularly in young people, including irreversible lung damage and even cancer. Smoking can lead to ongoing complications and long-term effects on your body systems.
They may resemble traditional tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or other common gadgets like pens, flashlights, USB flash drives, fidget spinners, gaming controls, car key fobs, smart watches and even asthma inhalers. With millions of teens and young adults using e-cigarettes, a new generation could become addicted to nicotine and face other health risks. For some adult smokers, e-cigarettes may offer a less harmful substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, long-term effects on users, second-hand exposure, and environmental effects are not yet fully known. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3].
Most modern cigarettes are filtered, although this does not make the smoke inhaled from them contain fewer carcinogens and harmful chemicals. Nicotine, the psychoactive drug in tobacco, makes cigarettes highly addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and lose on average 14 years of life.

Although e-cigarettes do not give off smoke like tobacco cigarettes, they do expose people to secondhand aerosol or "vapor" that may contain harmful substances. Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
Television advertisements for cigarettes have been banned in the U.S. since 1971, but in the past few years supposedly healthier, battery-powered alternatives have landed numerous prime-time appearances. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, as they are known, soaked up the spotlight in recent Super Bowl commercials, on late-night talk shows and in a comedy sketch during the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Indeed, a recent survey shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans are now familiar with the sleek, smokeless devices.
However, a major concern about vaping is its attraction for young people. And, while it’s safe when taken orally as a supplement or used on the skin, it’s likely an irritant when inhaled. It’s been found in the lungs of people with severe, vaping-related damage. Some of these additives have health risks, such as diacetyl, which has a buttery taste. Diacetyl has been found to cause a severe lung disease similar to bronchiolitis. Use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) impairs indoor air quality and increases FeNO levels of e-cigarette consumers.

Many people stick to regulated mods, which include circuit boards that can help prevent problems like power surges.
Because of this and other studies, vitamin E acetate is considered the main cause of EVALI. Other chemicals found in nicotine- and THC-containing vaping products may also play a role in the condition. It is important to know that most e-cigarettes contain addictive nicotine. There is evidence that nicotine harms the brain development of teenagers. Again, it is important to know that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine.

NSW Health acknowledges the people of the many traditional countries and language groups of New South Wales.
Upon the selection of the educational track, students may already have normative perceptions of smoking in vocational schools, such as understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in these schools and professions [8]. These perceptions may increase S-SM and other nicotine product use, also among students with better academic performance. Student network characteristics and their associations with smoking vary between schools [28].
Vaping products, "vapes" or "e-cigarettes", comprise a wide range of products that heat a substance to produce an aerosol that is inhaled. We link to further pages giving more detailed information about each company’s products, market share and business strategy, including methods used to promote their products around the world. We also point to examples of lobbying activity conducted by, and on behalf of, tobacco companies, in order to influence regulation around e-cigarettes. Reported sales of cartridge products increased from $2.133 billion in 2020 to $2.496 billion in 2021; sales of disposable, non-refillable e-cigarette products increased from $261.9 million in 2020 to $267.1 million in 2021. Bene-Alhasan also said e-cigarettes are not recommended as a tool to quit smoking, since many people may continue vaping long after they quit smoking.
Among people who were currently using e‑cigarettes, the proportion of people who used them daily remained stable from 2016 (42%) to 2019 (42%), then increased in 2022–2023 (49%). While more males than females used e‑cigarettes daily, the change among females was much greater than among males, rising from 36% in 2019 to 51% in 2022–2023. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in the number of females using e‑cigarettes daily, from approximately 70,000 to 300,000 (Figure 2).
E-cigarettes contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that regular cigarettes do. Nicotine is highly addictive, and most e-cigarettes include it as a main ingredient. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing e-cigarette or vaping products was linked to most EVALI cases. In 2022, e-cigarettes remained the most common tobacco product used by high school (16.5%) and middle school (4.5%) students in the last 30 days. And more than a quarter (27.6%) of current youth e-cigarette users say they use an e-cigarette product every day.
Given that nicotine easily diffuses from the dermis to the bloodstream, acute nicotine exposure by e-liquid spilling (5 mL of a 20 mg/mL nicotine-containing refill is equivalent to 100 mg of nicotine) can easily be toxic or even deadly [8]. Thus, devices with rechargeable refills are another issue of concern with e-cigarettes, especially when e-liquids are not sold in child-safe containers, increasing the risk of spilling, swallowing or breathing. An E-cigarette is any device or delivery system sold in combination with nicotine for a single price which can be used to deliver to a person nicotine in aerosolized or vaporized form. An E-cigarettes may also be known as e-cigar, e-pipe, vape pen, or e-hookah or other names. The definition of E-cigarettes includes any liquid or substance containing nicotine, whether sold separately or sold in combination with any device that could be used to deliver to a person nicotine in aerosolized or vaporized form. The fourth-generation vaporizers can also be customized and come with different types of heating coils — some intended for vaporizing solids, not liquids. In general, people using e‑cigarettes did not report doing so in order to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. In 2022–2023, only 1 in 5 (21%) people who had ever used e‑cigarettes reported that they first used e‑cigarettes to help them quit smoking (Figure 5). The most common reason people gave for using e‑cigarettes was out of curiosity (58%).
Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure. This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer-causing tobacco, and most of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes are not in e-cigarettes. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is replaced by e-liquid heating, leading some manufacturers to propose that e-cigarettes have less harmful respiratory effects than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as the adjustment of nicotine content and the choice of pleasant flavours have won over many users. Nevertheless, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a smoking cessation method remain controversial due to limited evidence. Moreover, it has been reported that the heating process itself can lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have been performed to better understand the impact of these new inhalable compounds on human health.

Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine. "Our finding indicates that health care expenditures for a person who uses e-cigarettes are $2,024 more per year than for a person who doesn’t use any tobacco products," said lead author Yingning Wang, PhD, of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.

E-Cigarettes, also called personal vaporizers or "vapes", present another way for smokers to ingest nicotine. E-Cigarettes have been marketed to young adults and adolescents through the use of candy and fruit flavors. They are also touted by some users as a "safer" alternative to smoking, and as a way to either quit smoking cigarettes, or to smoke in places where cigarette smoking is not allowed.
In addition to the battery component, an e-cigarette comprises an atomizer and a cartridge containing either a nicotine or a non-nicotine liquid solution. When the device is operated, the battery heats the liquid in the cartridge, and the atomizer vaporizes the liquid, emitting it as a mist that the user inhales. Hence, e-cigarette use is commonly described as vaping, a term also used in reference to the use of similar devices, including vape pens and e-hookas. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) go by many names, including but not limited to electronic nicotine delivery systems, vapes, vape pens, e-cigars, and hookah pens.
The prognosis depends on how much nicotine was taken and how quickly treatment was started. If a person is able to survive during the first four hours after poisoning, they’re usually likely to recover. If a person has been severely affected, they may have ongoing seizures or respiratory failure or other problems because of the damage done from low oxygen levels during the nicotine overdose event. Increased levels of nicotine or cotinine (nicotine metabolite) can be detected in urine or blood. Nicotine poisoning or overdose can also result from taking more than the recommended amount of nicotine replacement products (for example, chewing too much gum or dissolving lozenges) or taking too high of a dose of patches, inhalers or nasal sprays.
They found that the amounts of nicotine in the blood were similar between the two groups after 10 minutes of smoking at a constant rate. The flavoring liquid for electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when inhaled, according to a study led by researchers at the School of Medicine. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.

"This relatively small study showed that e-cigarettes have the potential to decrease heart muscle blood supply, not just under the stress of exercise like traditional cigarettes but even at rest," he says. The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].
The data shows that in 2021, 69.2 percent of e-cigarette cartridges either sold or given away contained menthol-flavored e-liquids, and the rest were tobacco-flavored. E-cigarette companies also spent $90.6 million more advertising and promoting their products in 2021 than in 2020. Flavored e-cigarettes are very popular, especially among young people.
While there appears to be some consensus that vaping may be less harmful to health than tobacco cigarette smoking, the dangers of e-cigarettes remain unclear. The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].
Evidence shows that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking. Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins and at lower levels than smoking cigarettes.
