If you’re having trouble quitting e-cigarettes on your own, get help from your doctor or from other support services, such as your state quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW) or the American Cancer Society (1-800-ACS-2345). Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are sometimes called e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Get the facts about e-cigarettes, their health effects, and the risks of vaping.
But with its plant-derived, additive-free formula and rigorous testing, this device from Tribe Tokes is one of the safest vape products for CBD lovers. Like the previous entries on our list, the BC5000 uses e-liquid that's free of diacetyl and vitamin E acetate. This is one of the safest vapes for quitting smoking while still enjoying the effects of nicotine.
If you think ENDS or other tobacco products are being sold to people who are underage, or you see another potential violation of the FD&C Act or FDA’s tobacco regulations, please report the potential tobacco product violation. Learn about public education efforts and resources that have been created to reach youth who are at higher risk of or more vulnerable to cigarette use and nicotine addiction. FDA created a toolkit, Resources for Professionals About Vaping & E-Cigarettes, for adults and professionals who work with youth. This FREE resource provides fast facts about youth vaping and e-cigarettes. Vaping exposes you to some of the same chemicals that cigarette smoking does. Vaping while pregnant can cause low birth weight, lung damage and brain damage in the developing fetus.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
Restrictions on importation, packaging and flavourings will come into effect in early 2024 (TGA 2023). Between 2012 and 2022, most Australian jurisdictions have amended their laws to further restrict the advertising and sale of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b). Recent reports have linked serious lung injury – and even deaths – to vaping. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking causes nearly 1 out of every five deaths in the United States. It’s possible that we don’t yet know all the physical effects of vaping. Numerous studies have been performed to evaluate the safety/toxicity of e-cigarette use both in vivo and in in vitro cell culture.
Vaping can cause lung injury and may affect lung health in other ways. Since COVID-19 can also affect your lungs, vaping may put your lungs at increased risk. Keep all vaping supplies and refill materials in child-resistant packaging out of the reach of children. Vaping hasn’t been around that long, so its health risks aren’t all known. The Australia Government has recently tightened the regulation of e-cigarette products.
According to the study, 40.1% of 1,018 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 29 surveyed said they refilled devices not intended to be refilled and 35.8% recharged the battery of vaping pods meant to be thrown out after one use. Others reported mixing nicotine and cannabis liquids in devices designed only for nicotine. The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. Some of the harmful substances emitted in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols are similar to those in secondhand tobacco smoke.
Watch the UK Health Security Agency's video demonstration on the impact of smoking versus vaping. As of July 1, 2024, 1,061 municipalities, plus 26 states, commonwealths, and territories restrict e-cigarette use in 100% smokefree venues. The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which the RCH is situated, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, and we pay our respects to their Elders past and present. Dr. Tan provides care to adults alongside an entire team of lung specialists at Loma Linda University Health.
Research has also shown flavor chemicals to be toxic in both e-liquid and aerosol form. While many flavor chemicals used in vaping products have been approved for ingestion, they have not yet been tested for safety when aerosolized. Flavor chemicals are typically not listed on e-cigarette packaging, and most e-liquids contain more than one flavor chemical. Benzaldehyde (used in cherry-flavored products) and 2, 5-dimethyprazine (used in chocolate-flavored products), specifically, may harm human health.
Long periods of dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes can result in harms to health similar to, or in addition to, the harms from exclusive use of cigarettes. Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving.
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. During the second half of the 20th century, the adverse health effects of tobacco smoking started to become widely known and printed health warnings became common on cigarette packets. This health advisory is being issued by the State Health Officer to inform the public about the alarming statistics on current e-cigarette use among youth in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, current e-cigarette use among Wisconsin high school students increased 154% between 2014 and 2018.
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health — smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke. The Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. If smokers are ready to quit smoking for good, they should call QUITNOW or talk with their doctor about finding the best way to quit using proven methods and FDA-approved treatments and counseling. Mass media campaigns such as truth ® have been highly effective in helping to reduce youth smoking. Truth has prevented millions of young people from becoming smokers, including 2.5 million between 2015 and 2018 alone.
The new rules will allow FDA to review the safety of batteries and eventually take action to protect the public. "Diacetyl is a well-known harmful chemical, which, among other things, causes a lung disease called 'popcorn lung,'" says Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. The Electronic Cigarette Company reserves the right to cancel any sales transaction based on its sole discretion where it reasonably believes the purchaser is purchasing products on behalf of a minor. More commonly known as e-cigs or vape kits, we stock a huge range of vaping hardware, from mouth to lung (MTL) to direct lung (DL). Our range of vape pods is ideal to use with nic salts and high-strength e-liquid.
At last I can feel like I am a part of society again, and not some evildoer who deserves to be sent out to the village gates to hide my atrocious acts. Siegel is concerned that the use of nicotine salts could make the Juul more addictive. "With Juul, the pattern of use isn’t kids having a cherry vape every now and then," he said. "It’s kids sneaking off to the bathroom, kids vaping consistently throughout the day." Siegel said that he was keeping an eye on this behavior.
When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
Beginning July 1, 2019, Illinois law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, including these products, to people younger than age 21. The smoke also caused damage to the lungs and bladders of mice, indicating that it may increase the risks of developing lung and bladder cancer. Since e-cigarettes arrived in the U.S. in 2007, they have been investigated by addiction researchers as possible cessation devices for adults trying to quit combustible, or regular, cigarettes.
The program’s curriculum includes a four-part series of lessons, with one set for fifth through eighth graders and another for high schoolers. The lessons teach students about the dangers of vaping, vaping marketing and resources for quitting vaping. Students that go through the program are 45% less likely to vape, according to Bianco. This is Quitting was developed by Truth Initiative, a nonprofit focused on ending tobacco use, as a free and anonymous text messaging program to help young people quit vaping.
A 2016 study found that people who use or have used e-cigarettes are less likely to stop smoking altogether. Flavors vary widely, from "traditional" and menthol to watermelon and "lava flow." Some e-cigarettes taste like traditional cigarettes and even mimic the tastes of specific brands. When the user sucks on the mouthpiece, the heating element vaporizes the solution, which the person then "vapes," or inhales. The nicotine content of the liquid can range from "very high" to zero. Refills come in flavors such as cool cucumber, mango, and mint, which may seem natural and harmless, but a single JUUL refill contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. To inform this work and evaluate the effectiveness of policy, the CDC Foundation is collecting and analyzing information about e-cigarette sales, teen e-cigarette use, and teens’ attitudes about the epidemic.
District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that e-cigarettes did not meet the criteria for drug-delivery devices and therefore were exempt from regulation under the FFDCA. The court did rule, however, that the FDA could regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (TCA), since the nicotine contained in some of the e-cigarette cartridges was derived from tobacco. Reports in 2018 of increased e-cigarette use among adolescents and teenagers in the United States prompted the FDA to identify strategies for combating e-cigarette use by minors. Altria’s data showed Njoy e-cigarettes helped smokers reduce their exposure to the harmful chemicals in traditional cigarettes, the FDA said. The agency stressed the products are neither safe nor "FDA approved," and that people who don’t smoke shouldn’t use them. The FDA regulates the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes (sometimes called "vapes").
Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.
In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. A second brand of e-cigarettes—marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe—contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine.
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
Despite that, e-cigarettes are more popular among U.S. teens than any other form of tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are battery powered devices that people use to heat liquid into a vapor that can be inhaled. Some studies have shown that vaping by some youth may be linked to later use of regular cigarettes and other tobacco products. Using e-cigarettes may play a part in some kids or teens wanting to use other, more harmful tobacco products. Although the term "vapor" may sound harmless, the aerosol that comes out of an e-cigarette is not water vapor and can be harmful. The aerosol from an e-cigarette can contain nicotine and other substances that are addictive and can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.
The program offers specially-trained coaches, real-time text or chat support, easy enrollment and youth-focused promotional and educational materials. The majority of cases reported to poison centers are due to accidental exposures in children less than 6 years old. This reflects the increasing availability of these products in the home due to use by guardians or older siblings. Additionally, in the last 5 years, the FDA has warned companies selling e-cigarette devices made in the shape of toys, foods or cartoons that specifically appeal to use by young people. Of this sample, 3,242 participants developed heart failure within a median follow-up time of 45 months. As e-cigarettes deliver flavorings, additives, and, typically, nicotine through an inhaled aerosol, they are harmful to both the user and those who are exposed secondhand.
All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
This was especially the case for people aged 14 to 17 (74%) and 18 to 24 (68%). The 2022–2023 NDSHS was conducted before these restrictions were put into place. At the time, in most jurisdictions, it was legal for adults to purchase e‑cigarettes that did not contain nicotine from a broad range of retail settings, including those used to purchase tobacco products. Prior to 2024, adults could also import nicotine e‑cigarettes with a prescription via the personal importation scheme. The first study found that vaping can worsen several heart disease risk factors at levels equal to tobacco cigarettes, while the second found that e-cigarettes decrease blood flow in the heart even more than tobacco cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes still pose health risks, even without nicotine.
For detailed, up to date information at country level, see the searchable database on the Tobacco Control Laws website, published by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK). Regulation of e-cigarettes varies widely across the world, from full bans (e.g. India); only being available on prescription (e.g. Australia); and to being freely sold as a consumer good (e.g. Europe, US). There's no specific antidote for nicotine poisoning, but medical professionals can provide medications to help support patients experiencing more serious symptoms of nicotine poisoning. If you think this is why your child vapes, talk to them about healthier ways to stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. Start by asking your child in a nonjudgmental, concerned way if they have tried vaping. Even if you don’t think your kids vape, talk about it with them anyway so they know it’s unhealthy. Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette). In some instances, because of its appearance and the vapours it emits, an e-cigarette may be confused with a regular cigarette. Other types of e-cigarettes, however, are similar to a cigar, a smoking pipe, or a ballpoint pen in appearance. This story has been updated to correct that two of the four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy are disposable products.
This data highlights a small part of a larger issue, despite the ban on e-cigarettes and vapes in India under the Prohibition of electronic cigarettes policy in the workplace Cigarettes (Production, Manufacture, Import, Export, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage, and Advertisement) Act, 2019. The Annual Review of Physiology article summarizes what is known—and highlights where gaps in knowledge exist—about e-cigarettes and harm to the lungs. The review discusses the range of effects found in rigorous studies, including shorter-term acute effects and longer-lasting chronic impacts. As substantiated in the review, a convincing body of evidence exists that confirms e-cigarettes cause lung inflammation and injury, as well as negative health effects in multiple organs. Crotty Alexander says e-cigarettes come with far more dangers than even she expected.
In December 2019, Congress raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21. Because of the popularity of certain flavored e-cigarette products among children, FDA stated in January 2020 that it would prioritize enforcement actions against the manufacture and sale of most flavors in cartridge-based e-cigarettes. In April 2020, FDA extended from May to September 2020 the deadline for manufacturers to apply for premarket authorization, a process that includes the scientific evaluation of risks and benefits of e-cigarettes for the U.S. population. NCI supports research to understand the potential impact of ENDS use on both individual and population health, as it relates to cancer control and prevention.
However, more research is needed to fully understand emissions from e-cigarettes and their impact on human health. These aerosols can contain potentially harmful substances — including nicotine, formaldehyde and metals — some of which cause cancer and other harmful health effects. Some e-cigarette brands and other nicotine products state they contain synthetic nicotine rather than nicotine made from or derived from tobacco.
More research needs to be done to understand the long-term health effects of secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor. Secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor is said to be less toxic than secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke. However, secondhand vapor is still a form of air pollution that probably poses health risks. N.L.B. serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies that market or are developing smoking cessation medications, and has provided expert testimony in litigation against tobacco companies. N.A.R. consults with and has received a research grant from Achieve Life Sciences for development of a smoking cessation medication, and receives royalties from UpToDate (an online medical textbook) as author of sections on e-cigarettes.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Researchers noted that study participants using both types of cigarettes had a higher nicotine dependence in relation to e-cigarettes. Find more resources on tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping on the SAMHSA Store.
"Most people know that tobacco smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals but, overall, there is less knowledge about the chemicals that are inhaled through vape vapors," he added. The research, published today in the journal JAMA Network Open, suggests that daily e-cigarette use may help some people quit using combustible cigarettes. The program, called CATCH My Breath, is an evidence-based youth vaping prevention program geared towards fifth through 12th graders. It is the only school-level youth vaping intervention program recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. FRIDAY, Aug. 2, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Experts have long suspected it, but a new study confirms that folks who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they'd done either alone. "Most people know that tobacco smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals but, overall, there is less knowledge about the chemicals that are inhaled through vape vapors," he added.

Whichever vape you choose, make sure you use it daily to help you make the switch from cigarettes. A vape bar, pod device or vape pen are good choices, as they are discreet, make small clouds and can give high amounts of nicotine. You can use patches with a vape if you need to, as these give ongoing support by releasing nicotine slowly. Some people find vaping helps them because the hand-to-mouth action is like smoking, plus you get similar sensations, like throat hit (the "kick" in the back of your throat when you inhale).
Among people who were currently using e‑cigarettes, the proportion of people who used them daily remained stable from 2016 (42%) to 2019 (42%), then increased in 2022–2023 (49%). While more males than females used e‑cigarettes daily, the change among females was much greater than among males, rising from 36% in 2019 to 51% in 2022–2023. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in the number of females using e‑cigarettes daily, from approximately 70,000 to 300,000 (Figure 2).
Many people believe electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or vapes) are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. But with a recent report from the U.S. surgeon general calling e-cigarette use "a major public health concern," this may not be the case. The FDA reports an alarming 900% rise in e-cigarette use among high school students from 2011 to 2015 and the number of high school students using them increased 78% in 2018 alone. Vaping doesn’t create second-hand smoke.Breathing in second-hand smoke is a health risk for people who are around cigarette smokers, including vapers. In addition, third-hand smoke on clothes and furniture is smelly and can be dangerous for people with respiratory conditions. Vaping doesn’t produce the same smelly fumes as cigarettes, but the secondhand vapor contains chemicals and compounds that pollute the indoor air.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. Be sure to meet all the following terms and conditions when buying or selling e-cigarettes, ENDS, or e-liquids on eBay. These terms and conditions may change over time and it is your responsibility to visit these pages to see if and how it may have changed, so that you can remain compliant. There is no data to show nicotine pouches as a safe or effective way to quit. University Health Center medical experts and Nebraska Medicine certified tobacco treatment specialist Jill Selzle, PA, do not recommend these products. Many providers ask their patients about alcohol, drug use and smoking, yet forget to ask about vaping. Project for Teens is an example of a local outreach program that provides support and education on the dangers of vaping.
The most consistent predictors have been descriptive norms of parents’ and close friends’ smoking, indicating that addressing close network members might be the most effective in interventions [27]. In our study, parental smoking reported by adolescents increased all types of susceptibility when analysed independently. In the multivariate models, it did not have clear associations with S-SN and S-EC among girls.

All authors contributed to manuscript revisions and have approved the final version of the article. The association between student- and school-level factors and susceptibility to e-cigarette use.
Where e-cigarette flavor restrictions had been in effect for at least a year, sales of cigarette brands favored by adults went up by 10%, while sales of cigarette brands that disproportionately attract underage smokers saw a 20% bump. During the study period, hundreds of localities and seven states restricted or prohibited flavored e-cigarette sales. While these policies did reduce per-capita vape sales, they also substantially boosted cigarette sales. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes. In vaping liquids, nicotine and/or flavouring ingredients are dissolved in a liquid mixture.
Not to mention the smell that lingers on a person’s body after finishing a cigarette, even if it was outside, far outlasts a vape any day. At Cornell, Jason told me, people Juuled in bathrooms and classrooms, in "every nook and cranny of this campus." In the fall, he’d started a group text, with a few friends, to coördinate pod runs. He called the group Juuluminati, and it has since grown to three hundred and twenty-four members. Jason was Juuling while he talked to me, on the third floor of an academic building. "I know for a fact that there are two or three of my good friends sitting on the first floor of this building eating ham sandwiches and just Juuling away," he said.
This national credential was developed for individuals who are currently coaching or aspire to coach at the interscholastic level. What we do know is that many cartridges contain nicotine, the dangerously addictive chemical found in normal cigarettes. Every provider at Loma Linda University Health can tell you how important it is to keep your lungs healthy. Our lung specialists, like Dr. Laren Tan, see patients every day who suffer from debilitating lung issues caused by smoking. Since the end of 2019, it is illegal to sell vaping products to people younger than 21 years.
I can go for six months at a time without catching a nasty, lingering cough. My clothing doesn’t reek of smoke all of the time and my car actually smells nice. So, though they are far from perfect, I am enjoying the changes that not smoking cigarettes has brought to my life. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," says Dr. Hyland, who is senior author on the new work. Adults in the U.S. who used e-cigarettes daily and also smoked combustible cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who smoked but used e-cigarettes less frequently. Justice announced the task force that they say will address the illegal domestic distribution and sale of electronic cigarettes.
WHO regularly monitors and reviews the evidence on ENDS and health and offers guidance to governments. "Yale physicians have been at the forefront in identifying EVALI cases," Dr. Weiss says. She explains that even before CDC guidelines on treating the illness were released, Yale doctors were successfully treating patients with a combination of antibiotics and steroids. Doctors at Yale Medicine also collaborate with researchers in the fields of tobacco and addiction medicine to provide care for patients with EVALI.
] have been offset by the increasing consumption in low income countries, especially China. The Chinese market now consumes more cigarettes than all other low- and middle-income countries combined. Levels of naphthalene were slightly higher than those of pyrene in e-cigarette emissions, while the respective air blank was lower. Nevertheless, it seems likely that these compounds were detected in e-cigarette emissions due to their presence as low-level contaminants in the background air, rather than originating from the vaping product. E-cigarettes are devices that use an electric battery to heat up a liquid (commonly called an "e-liquid") into an aerosol, which the user inhales. Vitamin E acetate, diacetyl, formaldehyde, and acrolein are just a few among hundreds of potentially hazardous substances commonly found in e-liquids and their aerosols.
Use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material improves heating efficiency, but how it affects the chemical emissions of these devices is unclear. We assessed the emissions of a pod e-cigarette with innovative ceramic wick-based technology and two flavoured e-liquids containing nicotine lactate and nicotine benzoate (57 and 18 mg mL−1 nicotine, respectively). Among the studied harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) listed by the US FDA and/or WHO TobReg, only 5 (acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, naphthalene and nornicotine) were quantified at levels of 0.14 to 100 ng puff−1. In the combustible cigarette (Kentucky reference 1R6F), levels were from 0.131 to 168 µg puff−1.
E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is highly addictive. While these devices may help some people quit smoking, there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can pose serious health risks, especially to people who do not smoke traditional cigarettes.
The composition of e-liquids requires stricter regulation, as they can be easily bought online and many incidences of mislabelling have been detected, which can seriously affect consumers’ health. Beyond their unknown long-term effects on human health, the extended list of appealing flavours available seems to attract new "never-smokers", which is especially worrying among young users. Additionally, there is still a lack of evidence of e-cigarette consumption as a smoking cessation method. Indeed, e-cigarettes containing nicotine may relieve the craving for smoking, but not the conventional cigarette smoking habit.

Overall, recent figures from JAMA suggest more than 2million kids under 18 vape regularly, along with 17million adults. Combined with smoking, it may accelerate these effects, leading to osteoporosis. Nicotine causes blood vessels to tighten, which restricts the flow of blood. Smoking also raises blood pressure, weakens blood vessel walls, and increases your risk of blood clots. A Yale study in 2019 found that, among students at three Connecticut public schools, those who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke regular cigarettes in the future. Most e-cigarettes have a battery, a heating element, and place to hold a liquid (such as a cartridge or pod). The e-liquid usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. As the user draws on the device, the battery heats the e-liquid to produce aerosol (not water vapor).
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, also highlighted that vaping "could be a major form of harm reduction for adults," although "not zero risk," but expressed strong concern over youth vaping. With the increasing use of e‑cigarettes, there has been greater support for policies aimed at controlling the prevalence of e‑cigarettes. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a "tumour enhancer". In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50]. Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker.
However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new, and their long-term effects are not yet known. The mid-to-long-term consequences of e-cigarettes are not yet known, as it's a new product and has been sold for less than a decade in the U.S. While much remains to be determined about these lasting health consequences of these products, we are very troubled by what we see so far. The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases.
For example, in an analysis using primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exposed to 11 commercially-available vapours, 5 were found to be acutely cytotoxic, and only 3 of those contained nicotine [24]. In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. E-cigarettes are sometimes called e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, e-hookahs, and electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDS.
Heating the liquid (e-juices) causes formation of an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. That figure is controversial and might be a little high, says Kenneth Warner, a tobacco policy researcher at the University of Michigan. But, he adds, "The worst critics of e-cigarettes would probably argue they're a half to two-thirds less dangerous. But from a practical view, they're probably on the order of 80% to 85% less dangerous, at least." A 2015 expert review from Public Health England estimated e-cigs are 95% less harmful than the real thing.
The most important points to know are that the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still unknown, and all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, can pose health risks to the user. The tobacco industry has co-opted the term harm reduction to further its own interests of reduced tobacco product regulation and expand its user base. E-cigarette use among adults has been more stable, with adult use remaining relatively low since around 2012. Recent data, however, showed a slight uptick in adult e-cigarette use from 4.5% in 2021 to 6% in 2022. While switching completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes can be less harmful than smoking, many adult smokers use e-cigarettes and cigarettes concurrently — increasing overall exposure to nicotine. Randomized control trials provide growing evidence that e-cigarettes with nicotine can increase quitting rates when compared to nicotine replacement therapies.
Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. A recent study compared the acute effects of e-cigarette vapor (with PG/vegetable glycerine plus tobacco flavouring but without nicotine) generated from stainless‐steel atomizer (SS) heating element or from a nickel‐chromium alloy (NC) [92]. Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). Vapes are electronic devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke. This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or "dual," use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes.
